Freedom250 — the White House-backed campaign organizing the so-called “Great American State Fair” on the National Mall — has billed itself as "the national, non-partisan organization leading the celebration of our Nation's 250th birthday." And like everything else in Donald Trump’s warped orbit, that’s a flag-draped, bald-faced lie.
The fair's kickoff concert, after nearly a dozen acts withdrew from the radioactive event, featured Lee Greenwood and Christopher Macchio — sycophantic performers whose primary credentials are having sung at Trump events before — and a headlining appearance by the president, of course, who spent 27 minutes bragging about his many “unbelievable” accomplishments while railing against those dastardly Democrats.

The fair's daily themes include two "MAHA Mondays," and Trump himself literally rebranded the July Fourth celebration as a MAGA political rally on Truth Social. This isn't a birthday party for America — it's a 16-day campaign commercial billed to the American taxpayers. Some estimates place the total cost of the spectacle at nearly $100 million, but exact figures have been hard to pin down — by design.
What hasn’t been hard to determine, however, is who is footing the bill. States that opted to participate were expected to fund their own exhibits, with cost estimates ranging from $100,000 to half a million dollars a pop or more — money that in may instances is coming straight from state taxpayers. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey put it plainly: Trump "invited all the states to participate and wants to charge us to go down and put something on his exhibit. It's just ridiculous. This is taxpayer money." Oregon officials declined to participate, citing "growing concerns that the event in Washington, DC is shaping up to be a more partisan affair than originally presented." Now there's a candidate for understatement of the year.
