On September 10, the US Census Bureau proposed significant changes to the decennial census that would undermine the accuracy and integrity of the count.
These changes will impact who is counted, where they are counted, and what questions can be asked on the census, and include: excluding any non-U.S. citizen without a green card from the apportionment count, eliminating questions about race and ethnicity, banning questions about sexual orientation, tying the count to tax records, and removing specificity that increases the risk that some groups (foster youth, people in shelters, and others) will be missed or counted in the wrong place.
These changes would suppress the count, effectively erasing communities from the data and causing decisions to be made on bad and faulty information. The loss of accurate census data means that our communities will miss out on their fair share of resources and representation.
We have an opportunity to take action. The Census Bureau is accepting public comments on the proposal through November 2nd. Now’s our chance to fight back!
Keep it fair, keep it accurate: act now to protect the 2030 census!
