We teach our kids to clean up after themselves. Oil and gas companies drilling on our public lands should be held to the same standards.

Instead, the Trump administration just proposed new rules that rig the system for oil and gas billionaires and cut out the American public who rely and recreate on our nation’s cherished public lands.

Critical wildlife habitat. Sacred cultural sites. Prime hunting and fishing areas. Local recreation destinations. NOTHING is off-limits from oil and gas drilling – and local communities will have no say about which lands are up for sale.

By rolling back the safeguards that protect taxpayer wallets and critical landscapes, Trump’s Interior Department will:

Demand taxpayer money to clean up the oil and gas industry’s' abandoned wells that are littered across our public lands by rolling back bonding requirements to levels first set in the 1950s and 60s.
Eliminate opportunities for the public to weigh in on oil and gas leasing decisions – effectively silencing locals from speaking up when drilling doesn’t make sense.
Remove important leasing criteria, guaranteeing more conflict between oil and gas development sites, wildlife habitat, and cultural and outdoor recreation resources.

The Interior Department’s rollbacks could force taxpayers to pay billions of dollars to clean up messes they didn’t make. This is a taxpayer bailout of Big Oil. The Interior Department MUST uphold Western values and protect the everyday American before it’s too late.

Dear Department of the Interior (DOI): I strongly urge the Department of the Interior to uphold key provisions of the 2024 Oil and Gas Bonding Rule. The DOI’s proposal to rollback protections in theRule is a direct affront to our values. Removing bonding requirements and public input opportunities will undermine local economies and jeopardize critical wildlife habitat, sacred cultural sites, prime hunting and fishing areas, and local recreation destinations.  Communities must have a say during the leasing stage when areas with  high wildlife, recreation, and public health value are proposed for energy development. We cannot afford to weaken leasing criteria or shut  the American public out of decisions being made about our federal public lands – especially when our health and local economies are on the line.   In addition to opening up critical habitat and recreation areas to destructive development, these rollbacks would pass billions in financial liabilities from the trillion-dollar oil and gas industry back onto local communities and taxpayers. A new Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship report estimates that oil and gas companies are poised to drill as many as 3.8 million new wells on our national public lands, causing the taxpayer burden to skyrocket to up to <a href="https://www.conservativestewards.org/crs-bonding-report/" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(17, 85, 204);">$753.5 billion in taxpayer liabilities in the coming years</a>.  Already, orphaned wells are posting public health and safety threats to residents across the West. Westerners are in <a href="https://www.coloradocollege.edu/other/stateoftherockies/conservationinthewest/2025-poll-data/Energy%20and%20Public%20Lands.pdf" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(17, 85, 204);">nearly unanimous agreement</a> that oil and gas companies should pay for land restoration costs and cleaning up their own messes on our public lands. Removing or diminishing bonding requirements rejects this unprecedented public support. I stand with the majority of Westerners who want to see their elected officials uphold Western values and protect our wildlife, communities, and taxpayers by putting a stop to these destructive rollbacks.
