Tell Trump to stop holding the Kennedy Center hostage and cease all threats to demolish it!
Donald Trump’s ongoing crusade to slap his name anywhere he can on the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts reached new levels of crazy this month when he ordered the storied institution shuttered until the courts or Congress capitulate to his ridiculous demands. Trump told reporters the nation’s preeminent performing arts center — a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy — might even have to be “ripped down” if the vainglorious narcissist-in-chief doesn’t get his way.
Tell Donald Trump to end his ridiculous fight to rename the Kennedy Center after himself!
A federal judge already ruled that Trump cannot simply rename the center after himself without congressional approval. Donald predictably responded by threatening to withhold $257 million already allocated by Congress for long-planned renovations and repairs. He also had the Kennedy Center board he previously stacked with sycophants close the center and erect a security fence around it.
We know this is unpleasant news for our toddler-in-chief to hear, but the federal monuments and historic buildings in our nation’s capital are not his personal playthings. The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to an assassinated president AND a public trust paid for by taxpayers. It’s also a top provider of arts education nationwide and a real economic driver in the Washington, DC area, employing some 2,500 before the president started meddling with it.
It most certainly is NOT a Trump naming-rights opportunity or a building he can take a wrecking ball to out of petty spite. Congress has spoken. The courts have spoken. It’s time Donald listened for a change.
