It has been months since Donald Trump, without a declaration of war from Congress and without anything resembling a coherent strategy, joined Israel in launching massive airstrikes on Iran. And every single day since, people all around the world — in particular Iranian and Lebanese civilians — have paid a devastating price for it.
In his repeated attempts to justify the strikes, Trump has spun the rationale wheel and landed on half a dozen different explanations, none of them remotely convincing. Then, on Tuesday, April 7th, 38 days into a quagmire of his own making and with his back firmly against the wall, Trump ratcheted the volume up to 11 and threatened genocide against the entire Iranian “civilization.”

While the rationale for the war is still up for debate — even in the Oval Office — what is not in dispute is the cost. US oil prices have doubled since the start of 2026. Gas has blown past $4 per gallon. The suffering is not limited to fuel prices, of course. Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz triggered a grocery supply emergency across Gulf states, disrupting 70% of the region's food imports and causing consumer prices to spike, and Iranian strikes on desalination plants have threatened the drinking water supply for millions.
Israel's assault and ground invasion of southern Lebanon has killed more than 1,700 people and displaced more than 1 million, deepening a humanitarian catastrophe with no end in sight. Amnesty International has warned that strikes on energy infrastructure carry "a substantial risk of violating international humanitarian law." And Popea Leo XIV — the first American-born pope in history — has called Trump's threats against the Iranian people "truly unacceptable."

After barely a month, Trump has now thrown his own ceasefire into the garbage because he cannot stand to abide by terms laid down by somebody else.
This war was not declared by Congress. It was not sold to the American people. It has no clear objective, no exit strategy, and no end in sight — only a skyrocketing body count and an exploding price tag.
