Tell the DOJ: Do NOT give Trump a taxpayer-funded payout to settle his bogus IRS lawsuit!
In January, Donald Trump sued the IRS and Treasury Department — government agencies his executive branch directly oversees — for a staggering $10 BILLION in damages over the leak of his federal tax returns during his first term in office. Now, the Department of Justice, which is technically acting as the government’s "defense" team, is holding internal discussions about actually settling the case. The DOJ, of course, is currently being run by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump’s former personal criminal defense attorney. Still with us?
In a February letter to the DOJ and Treasury Department, Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden laid bare the facts of the case: "The leaks occurred from May 2019 through September 2020, when President Trump was in office and his hand-picked nominees, Steven Mnuchin and Charles Rettig, controlled the Treasury and IRS, respectively. Trump is in essence now suing the government for his own failures during his first term."
As Edward Whelan, a conservative former DOJ lawyer put it, "There is a glaring conflict of interest with Trump being on both sides of the claim… It is outrageous that he and those answering to him would be deciding how the government responds to these extravagant claims."
An actual headline for this story could literally read "Trump admin weighs settling Trump lawsuit against Trump admin on behalf of Trump." Oh, and should the DOJ approve a settlement in Trump’s favor, any monies awarded would come directly from American taxpayers.
Tell the DOJ: Do NOT let Trump reward himself with OUR tax dollars!
This is unprecedented corruption not even bothering to hide in broad daylight. There is real risk that Trump and his sycophantic cronies will simply agree to an unconscionable settlement — in Donald's favor, of course. Trump himself has even openly bragged, "I'm supposed to work out a settlement with myself."
Folks, the wheels are coming off our democracy. The DOJ must reject ANY settlement in this self-dealing sham of a lawsuit, defend the American taxpayers in court, and steadfastly refuse to allow a sitting president to treat the public treasury like his own personal ATM.
Demand the DOJ protect American taxpayers and REJECT any bogus lawsuit settlement award for Trump!
