Republicans in North Carolina have introduced one of the most abominable, dangerous, and downright disgusting bills in the history of the state legislature, classifying abortion as first-degree murder and thus punishable by death.
Tell North Carolina lawmakers to REJECT House Bill 1232!
If it passes, Republicans’ latest assault on reproductive healthcare would grant “personhood” to any fertilized human egg — even before the egg has implanted in the uterus. Thus, a woman “caught” using an IUD or opting for abortion care — for any reason — could literally be charged with homicide.
The bill makes no exceptions for someone suffering from an ectopic pregnancy, a tragic medical scenario that is non-viable for the fetus and almost always fatal for the woman. The National Institutes of Health estimates that 1-2% of all pregnancies in the United States are, in fact, ectopic, affecting anywhere between 35,000 and 70,000 women each year.
But wait, it gets even worse. The bill also states that "[a]ny person has the right to defend his or her own life or the life of another person, even by the use of deadly force if necessary, from willful destruction by another person," giving abusive partners the green light to murder women for something as simple as using an IUD.
Every time we think they've hit the absolute bottom, Republicans find a way to go even lower.
Demand lawmakers in North Carolina REJECT House Bill 1232 and say NO to legalizing the use of deadly force against women seeking reproductive healthcare!
