Prisoners swept up in Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant crusade have launched a hunger and labor strike at the Delaney Hall ICE detention center, protesting against inhumane and unsanitary living conditions. Meanwhile, protesters outside the facility have been met with increasingly aggressive tactics by armed ICE officers and state police. Democratic Sen. Andy Kim was pepper-sprayed outside the facility in late May while trying to de-escalate a standoff between agitated demonstrators and militarized ICE agents. If they’re willing to pepper-spray a sitting US senator, just imagine what’s going on behind closed doors.
Give health inspectors full access to the Delaney Hall ICE detention center now!
According to The Guardian, “Delaney Hall strikers have complained of inedible food” infested with worms, “deficient infrastructure with no air conditioning and poor ventilation, a persistent flu and other viruses spreading throughout the facility, delayed medical care, and lags in their immigration cases.”
Amy Torres, executive director at the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice, echoed those concerns, telling The Guardian, “Conditions were bad enough for people to lose their pregnancies. They were bad enough to start a lice infestation, to have a strain of flu that has been going around untreated. That’s what got people to strike.”
It’s reprehensible that human beings whose only “crimes” were being born in the wrong geographical coordinates — including some with ongoing cases in immigration court — are being detained indefinitely in a for-profit prison, often without cause. It’s downright criminal that they’re being treated like stray animals.
Democratic state Attorney General Jennifer Davenport filed a lawsuit against The GEO Group, the company that operates Delaney Hall and was given a $1 BILLION federal contract by the Trump administration to help carry out its immoral anti-immigrant crusade, demanding the New Jersey Department of Health be granted full access to the facility. Every day state inspectors are denied access is another day where disease will spread and human suffering will worsen.
Tell ICE to let state health inspectors inside Delaney Hall now!
